Premier Jeff Kennett sees privatisation as a pivotal means of rescuing Victoria and restoring the economic health of the state.

At the same time, Victoria was having one of it's worst mass food poisonings when 650 people treated for salmonella poisoning and 3 deaths since the start of March. Most of the incidents were traced back to contaminated pork rolls. The State Goverment released a new strategy for dealing with the contamination issue later in April.
