This cartoon marked the death of Deng Xiaoping who succeeded Mao Zedong as leader of the Peoples Republic of China. Deng was praised for his many economic reforms during his time in office. However his treatment of those involved in the Tiananmen Square uprising left many questions about his actions.

At home (for Jeff) the State of Victoria had suffered a drought and fire prone summer, and was in middle of major heatwave.
