The first modern Anzac Day Australian Rules Football match, traditionally played between Collingwood and Essendon, was played on Tuesday 25th April, 1995.

After the Anzac Day march in Melbourne City crowds flocked to the MCG with the result that the gates had to be closed 40 minutes before the start of the game. 20,000 fans had to be turned away from outside the stadium.
