Melbourne to host the Grand Prix.

Melbourne acquires the Formula 1 Grand Prix, formerly held at Adelaide. Local residents, concerned about the effect it would have on their neighbourhood quickly formed "Save Albert Park" to protest against holding the race at Albert Park Lake. As it was, they were no strangers to people driving at high speed in the area...

The first Melbourne based Formula 1 Grand Prix was held just over 18 months later in 1996.
