Australia's Kathy Watt had won an historic gold medal in the Barcelona Olympics. Unfortunately the bicycle-led recovery in Australia's sporting fortune had not translated to the economy and the inflation rate much to the chagrin of Prime Minister Paul Keating and Treasurer John Dawkins.
