Dealing with the competition.

At this time the rivalry between now backbencher Paul Keating and Prime Minister Bob Hawke had reached a crescendo. Opposition Leader John Hewson's 'Fightback' package was having a powerful effect on Labor Cabinet. Without former Treasurer Keating's skill the incumbent Labor government was unsuccessful in setting productive answers to Hewson's plans. in a Labor Caucus ballot Paul Keating became Labor Leader and Prime Minister on 20th December, 1991.
