The End of the 1991 Uprisings

The end of the first Gulf War saw a series of popular rebellions in northern and southern Iraq in March and April 1991. After initial success the revolt fell into disarray and was brutally suppressed by forces loyal to Saddam Hussein.

The toll on human life and the suffering was dreadful, tens of thousands of people died and nearly two million refugees fled from Iraq.
