A distraction!

The problems faced by Labor Prime Minister Bob Hawke and Treasurer Paul Keating in August 1990 - Budget time - included the difficulties with Australia's economy. High interest rates, rising unemployment and the wind back of the clothing, textile and motor vehicle industries took their toll. The Middle East was in crisis as well. Iraq's leader Sadam Hussein had proceeded with an invasion of Kuwait on August 2.
