Director of the APPEA - Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association - had told the June 1990 conference that the RV Rig Seismic cruise exploration had revealed that 300 million - one billion barrels of oil could be obtained on North East areas of the Continental Shelf.

Eventually, after pressure from the public, environmentalists, and the Minister for the Environment Ros Kelly, Prime Minister Bob Hawke stepped in to say that exploration would not be allowed to harm the reef.
