Labor Prime Minister Bob Hawke and his Treasurer Paul Keating steered Australia through a significant recession in 1990-91. The collapse of the huge Pyramid Building Society in the state of Victoria and the conditions of overseas trade for Australia exacerbated the situation at the time.
