In early 1990 an area of Australia, larger than Germany, was covered by floods in the Eastern states of Queensland, New South Wales and a separate flood in Victoria. Cyclones and repeat flooding of wet ground was the cause of the huge spread of water.

Flood insurance and the payment of policies was a greatly contentious issue at the time.
