Ding, ding!

A Federal election was to be held on 24th March, 1990. At this time Melbourne had been in the grip of a tram strike which had crippled public transport around the city.

Labor Prime Minister Bob Hawke and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs in the Hawke Government Gerard Hand who held the seat of Melbourne were hoping for an early settlement of the strike.
