Australian Wimbledon champion Pat Cash had been a finalist in the 1987 Australian Open where he was defeated 6-3 6-4 3-6 5-7 6-3 by Stefan Edberg. He again lost to Mats Willander in 1988 after a great battle between the two, and then was defeated again by Stefan Edberg at the Australia Open in 1989.
