On October 1st,1988 the Labor Premier of Victoria John Cain had just been re-elected with a very slim majority.

Following straight on, for the first time in forty years, the former Country Party now the National Party lead by Peter Ross-Edwards had formed a Coalition with the Liberal Party lead by Jeff Kennett. The combination did not augur well for the Labor Party in future elections.
