It's a jungle you know!

Against a background of World Bank inquiries into the global effects of the management of world rain forests, especially on the Third World countries, Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke and Treasurer Paul Keating were preparing for the next Federal election. At the time Queensland Premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen also appeared to be in the race, conducting a 'Joh for Prime Minister' campaign. The election was finally held on 11th July 1987 with Bob Hawke being returned.

Frameworks for management of Australian Forests were set up by 1992 and work has continued in subsequent years. Logging and forest management are still regarded as environmental issues of great concern by the Australian public.
