Feeling the heat...

On the 1st January 1987, Premier of Queensland Joh Bjelke-Petersen Had announced his 'Jo for Prime Minister' campaign ahead of his loss of power within his State Party and of coming Federal elections. By-elections were held in the NSW electorates of Heathcote and Bankstown due to questionable behaviour and subsequent resignation of incumbents.

Prime Minister Bob Hawke, Treasurer Paul Keating and Opposition leader John Howard made extraordinary efforts to ensure that their party would win.
