A recount perhaps?

While there were concerns over pollution levels in Los Angeles and the possible effects, interest in the running of the 1984 Olympic Marathon extended throughout Australia. The winner Carlos Lopes of Portugal won the 1984 contest in the time of 2.09.21. Australia's Robert de Castella came in fifth in 2.11.09. He held the World record of 2.08.18 run at Fukuoka-Japan on 6th December, 1981.

Meantime Prime Minister Bob Hawke was having to contend with unions and proposed work bans and strikes as industrial reforms were put in place.
