No nukes please!
The ANZUS treaty (Australian, New Zealand and United States ) was of
concern to Australian Labor Prime Minister Bob Hawke, immediate past
National Party Prime Minister of New Zealand Sir Robert Muldoon and
newly elected Labour Prime Minister David Lange. David Lange was elected
in a snap election brought on by an opposition sponsored anti-nuclear
bill. The encumbent Sir Robert Muldoon was defeated and David Lange
installed on 26th July 1984. Following his election David Lange enacted
anti-nuclear laws banning nuclear powered ships and ships carrying nuclear
weapons. New Zealand forces are no longer part of the ANZUS treaty.
