The British Aircraft Carrier HMS Invincible was banned from entering Australian ports because of suspicions that it carried nuclear weapons. The ship needed to access docking facilities in Singapore instead.

John Halfpenny - a left wing union leader - declared opposition to any servicing of the ship in Australia. The incumbent Hawke Labor Government avoided commitment to any course of action.
