Australia was in the grip of the worst drought due to lack of short term rainfall. Water restrictions had been introduced in the State of Victoria.

Firemen all over the State and Australia were doing a sterling job in bravely fighting the many bushfires. In spite of this it was during the same summer on February 16th, 1983 that the tragic Ash Wednesday fires occurred.
