It was the opening day of the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane. Australia's indigenous people were again campaigning for Land Rights. Other news at the time caused "retrospectivity" to be the subject of wide discussion in relation to the "Bottom of the Harbour" tax avoidance scheme.
