Bill Hayden narrowly defeated Bob Hawke in his challenge for Leadership of the Australian Labor Party. Bill Hayden had refused to stand with the left wing party faction's wish to repudiate uranium mining policy, at the time Bob Hawke was unable to command the support of the left wing factions either, but, owing to Hayden's stance, it seemed that a successful challenge by Hawke was inevitable.
