The Brixton riots.

The Brixton riots which erupted on Monday April 13th, 1981 were the result of a build up of tension between police and white and black inhabitants. More riots were to occur later that year and, on later analysis, it appears they were more the result of socio-economic conditions rather than race.

Meanwhile, on April 12th the Space Shuttle Columbia flown by Commander John W. Young and pilot by Robert L. Crippen, became the first shuttle to orbit the earth. Ideas of space travel abounded.
