President of the ACTU Bob Hawke was extremely popular. He advocated many causes close to the public heart in his public statements. Liberal Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser was at this stage dismissive of Hawke who resigned his ACTU office in 1980 and went on to defeat Fraser at the 1983 elections.
