On the doorstep...

In 1977 the Liberal Government lead by Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser had recognized 'a humanitarian commitment to admit refugees for resettlement' and formalised a policy document after criticism that it was failing to do enough for the refugee problem.

The first Vietnamese refugees came by boat in 1976 when 2000 people arrived in need of somewhere to settle after the Vietnam War. Numbers kept growing as refugees sort to leave the terrible conditions of camps in Asia. By the 1980's about 90,000 people had been resettled.
