The Belle Vue Hotel.

At 12.20 on the night of 20th April 1979, the Belle Vue, a Brisbane landmark at the corner of George and Alice Streets, was demolished with the approval of the premier, Joh Bjelke-Petersen, in spite of wide spread opposition. The resulting controversy was regarded by many as a watershed in alerting the Queensland public to the issue of the preservation of heritage buildings.
