The Iranian Revolution ousted from power The Shah of Iran Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, who with his wife, left Iran on January 16th, 1978, with the followers of the Ayatollah Khomeini taking over. The new regime was hostile to the US and was causing concerns in the US about oil supply, which had been at a crisis point since November, 1978.
