The Hilton Bombing.
Tragically three Australians died in the bomb blast that occurred
outside the Hilton Hotel in Sydney on 13th February, 1978. Indian
officials at the Commonwealth Heads Of Government Meeting (CHOGM)
were thought to be the target and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm
Fraser, who was staying at the Hilton immediately canceled the meeting.
While there is now considerable doubt
as to the actual circumstances around the blast, it did mark the beginning
of Australian awareness of, and the need to protect against,
international terrorism.
