Out for a stroll!

It was 25 years of her reign and the Silver Jubilee year of Queen Elizabeth II was celebrated. The coincidence of her visit to Australia with Prince Philip and the disagreements about the proposed Bourke Street Mall meant that the Royal couple walked down a barricaded Swanston Street to meet people in front of the Town Hall and attend Moomba festivities. Lord Mayor Donald Osborne presided with Premier Rupert Hamer.

The traditional vote for 'King of Moomba' resulted in the choice of Mickey Mouse. Whilst a popular icon the human contenders were not pleased and neither was the public.
