The Labor Government led by Prime Minister Gough Whitlam had sunk in the popularity polls to 32%. In 1975 the Budget was brought down in August amid a rise in inflation and unemployment and was to be fateful as the Liberal Opposition used its numbers in the Senate to prevent the passage of the Budget.
