Getting some help!

Since 1969 British cricket legend (later Sir) Alec Bedser had been Chairman of Selectors for the English Test Cricket team. He was knighted in 1996 for his services to cricket.

In 1974 Jeff Thomson and Dennis Lillee had decimated the English batsmen in the first match of the series in Brisbane. Colin Cowdrey at 41 years of age joimed his English counterparts and came out to play in Perth. Australia won the series for the first time in 10 years. Sir Murray Fox was the Lord Mayor of London that year.
