To his chagrin Prime Minister Gough Whitlam had no knowledge that President Nixon USA would involve the Australian-based Base at North West Cape in The Middle East War. A furious Whitlam would respond that his government
would honour 'existing arrangements' at the time but that there would be no 'extensions or proliferations.' and consequences ensued for the Whitlam government.
Funnily enough, at this stage The North West Cape Base also needed funds and the base became a joint facility in 1974, eventually handed over totally to the Royal Australian Navy in 1993.
