During the 1973 Yom Kippur War Pine Gap base was put on red alert as a target from abroad. Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam and Singapore's Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, who did not invite the same attention were at odds over the issue of home grown bases.
