The recognition of China by Opposition Labor Leader Gough Whitlam when he visited China in 1971 had been attacked by Liberal Leader William McMahon and his Coalition as well as Vince Gair Leader of the Democratic Labor Party (DLP). His stance was compromised when United States President Richard Nixon himself visited China on February 20th, 1972 with the resultant normalization of relationships.

At the time the DLP were famous for running advertisements which partly talked about the need to censor pornography...
