A day at the races!

Spring racing season leading up to the Melbourne Cup. Sir Henry Bolte - Premier of Victoria - taking bets after commenting that the Trades Hall Council, won't take any industrial action that would upset the running of the Melbourne Cup.

Apart from the lack of strike action affecting the cup, our lucky punter is also including a bet on the future Australian Prime Minister. At the time there was a crisis in liberal party leadership only resolved when John Gorton cast his vote against himself leaving Sir William McMahon to lead the party to the next Federal election in 1972. Even though Sir Henry would have rated Gough at 100 to 1 in 1969, in 1972 Gough Whitlam became Prime Minister.
