French president Charles de Gaulle was described by Australian Foreign Affairs journalist Douglas Wilkie as 'indulging in a mild flirtation with Britain by visualizing a new European organization which would displace the Common Market, dispense with NATO and exclude American influence.' President Richard Nixon lead the United States. Harold Wilson was Prime Minister of Britain. Much diplomacy followed as Britain withdrew from East of Suez and balances were delicately maintained.
