A new high flyer!Gough Whitlam had won the leadership of the Australian Labor Party on 30th April, 1968. Whitlam's popularity and his new directions proved problematic for the encumbent Liberal Government. Difficulties were in the timing of an election for Prime Minister John Gorton and Minister for Defence Allen Fairhall, who was mainly responsible for the Liberal Government's introduction of the new F111 which was having some teething problems. |
