Who's up to what?

The Space Race between US and USSR to land a man on the moon was unofficial but most competitive. The United States of America had landed an unmanned spacecraft - Surveyor 3 - on the Moon's Ocean of Storms on April 20, 1967. The purpose was to take core specimens of the lunar surface. The new Soviet space craft - Soyuz 1 - carrying veteran cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov had been launched into space on April 23rd.

N.B. This cartoon was drawn on April 23rd. Sadly, after publication on April 24, Komarov tragically died later in the day when the parachute system on his craft failed during landing.
