Finding a name...

Demand for international flights from Australia was growing at a great rate so in 1962 Prime Minister Robert Menzies announced a 5 year plan to provide Melbourne with a $45 million International Jetport in Western Melbourne environs. In 1967 there was much discussion about the name of the new airport which was finally opened in 1970. At first called Melbourne International Airport but it was later named Tullamarine.

Tullamareena (or Tullamarine, Dullamarin) was an elder man of the Wurundjeri Indigenous people of the area in 1835.

For those interested in "culture of the time" - 'Smooth and International' was often used to promote beverages at the time.
