President of The United States Lyndon Baines Johnson visited Australia on 20th October, 1966 for three days. Earlier Harold Holt had succeeded Liberal Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies on his retirement and had used the phrase 'All the way with LBJ' in reference to Australia's involvement in Vietnam. Opposition Labor Leader Arthur Calwell ("seen" on the perch!) fought the election of 26th November when Holt was elected Prime Minister in his own right. Although on opposite sides of politics neither Calwell nor Sir Robert Menzies approved of the escalation of troop involvement in Vietnam.

There is no hook in this cartoon as it was published in the Saturday Evening Mercury. If you look carefully you should be able to see Jeff, 3 babies, and a can of rhubarb though!
