On the way!

Julia Gillard becomes the first woman Prime Minister of Australia as she wins the leadership of the Australian Labor Party from sitting Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

Dr Carmen Lawrence became Australia's first woman Premier in February 1990 followed by Joan Kirner who became the first woman Premier of Victoria when she won leadership of her State Labor party in Victoria in August, 1990. Anna Bligh, also Labor Party, became the first elected woman Premier in Queensland state elections in 2008. For the history behind the polka-dots see 4th March 1991.

As a footnote: Julia Gillard actually wore polka-dots to her first interview as Prime Minister with Laurie Oakes on Sunday, 27th June 2010. While it might have been a simple choice of clothing, there's probably a touch of humor there somewhere!
