Protests at the World Trade Organisation Conference.

The World Trade Organisation had to cancel the opening ceremonies at its conference in Seattle because protesters chained themselves together and lay down in intersections. Violent exchanges with the police followed and the Mayor of Seattle, Paul Schell, declared a civil emergency and imposed a curfew.
