John Howard had become Liberal Prime Minister of Australia on 11th March, 1996. On the 10th of September former Liberal Candidate and then Independent Member for Oxley gave her maiden speech in Federal Parliament and political discourse in Australia changed forever.
Accused of racism by many, Pauline Hanson was later asked in
an interview with Tracey Curio whether she was xenophobic - Mrs. Hanson replied 'Please explain!' She is credited with pushing, among others, the issue of race into mainstream politics in Australia because of her controversial views. She founded the One Nation Party in 1998.
