Down by the Lake!

Foreign debt and the Australian consumer prove a headache for Prime Minister Paul Keating.

At the same time a sculpture called "Down by the Lake with Liz and Phil" which was part of a temporary outdoor exhibition located on the shore of Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra was also attracting considerable controversy. The sculpture, by Greg Taylor, portrayed a naked Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip sitting on a park bench. Unfortunately, in addition to the controversy, it also attracted vandals only a few days after it was erected - the head of the female figure being stolen on night of 13th of April. By the 16th of April the sculpture was so damaged it had to be removed.
