Prime Minisiter Paul Keating's wife Annita watches TV as the pop group 'The Rolling Stones' had just started their 'Voodoo Lounge Tour' of Australia and New Zealand in Melbourne.

At the same time Brendan Smyth of the opposition Liberal Party had just won the ACT seat of Canberra at a by-election held on the 25th March, 1995. The by-election was caused by the resignation of former Minister Ros Kelly who had been unable to satisfactorily explain the distribution of grants for sport to marginal electorates. The 'Sports Rorts Affair' brought pressure from all sides for her to give up her seat.
