A difficult defence.

Alexander Downer was in the last throes of his tenuous leadership of the Australian Liberal Party. He resigned four days later on the 26th January. John Howard took over the party and in 1996 commenced an eleven year period as Prime Minister. Australia had avoided defeat in the earlier Test cricket because of heavy rain.
