The Benson and Hedges World Cup began on 5th March, 1992. Australia versus England. England went on to win by 8 wickets with 55 balls remaining. Not a great day for Australian cricket.

Previously, in February, 1992 Labor Prime Minister Paul Keating called for a new Australian flag. He stated that the presence of the Union Jack in the corner was better suited to a colony than a nation of Australia's independence.
