Keeping the tide at bay!

Australian Labor Prime Minister Bob Hawke faces a rising tide of anger and criticism from the Australian people including union organizations for his response to the November 12, 1991 massacre of demonstrators by Indonesian troops at Santa Cruz cemetery, Dili. 271 were killed, 382 injured and 250 people went missing.

Hawke condemned the massacre and urged the Indonesians to conduct a 'full and open inquiry' but stopped short of encouraging an independent investigation.
