Joan Kirner awaits the Commonwealth Bank representative for the sale of the State Bank of Victoria. The announcement about the purchase was made on the 26th of August, with final merger taking place on 1st January 1991. The sale was the result of the collapse in the State Bank's merchant banking arm Tricontinental through a series of bad loans.
