Going with what worked!

The wool industry was of great concern during the administration of Labor Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer Paul Keating .

Efforts were needed to reduce the huge reserves of fine Australian wool that had been hoarded by the later restructured AWC (Australian Wool Corporation). The Button Plan had lead to a rejuvenation of the Australian steel industry and car manufacture in the mid-eighties as the Hawke Government adopted Senator John Button's plan through which unions and manufacturer's reached agreements that lead to industrial peace and greater productivity.
